The City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg – VdL) is organising a new edition of the "Rencontres sans frontières" (meetings without borders) event, set to take place at the Boy Konen sports complex in Cessange on Sunday 16 June 2024, from 10:00 to 19:00; registrations are open from Saturday 24 February 2024.

This event is a sporting and intercultural day, offering football and beach volleyball tournaments, cycling activities at the cycle park Boy Konen, a rugby activity reserved for women and a friendly intercultural party combining music, dances, games and entertainment for the whole family.

This day, organised in collaboration with the Liaison and Action Committee for Foreigners (Comité de Liaison des Associations d'Etrangers - CLAE), reflects the VdL’s desire to promote the integration of its many resident nationalities through sport and culture. The capital of Luxembourg is currently home to more than 71% of citizens of foreign origin and 167 different nationalities.

Football tournaments from six years old

Each football tournament is open to both men and women and will be played with teams made up of nine players, including six outfield players, a goalkeeper and two reserve players. To encourage the mixing of cultures, each team will have a maximum of four players of the same nationality. Thus, this intercultural tournament offers a unique opportunity to come together with other players who share the same passion for sport.

Matches will last between 10 and 20 minutes; the exact duration will be determined after registration closes. Teams of fewer than nine players will be supplemented by individual registrations. Several tournaments will be played in different age categories: six-to-eight years, nine-to-eleven years, twelve-to-fourteen years, fifteen-to-seventeen years and over eighteen.

Beach volleyball tournament from thirteen years old

The beach volleyball tournament is open to men, women and young people aged thirteen and over. Teams will be made up of five players including four on the field and one reserve. Each team will have a maximum of three players of the same nationality. Teams of fewer than five players will be supplemented by individual registrations.

New for 2024: Touch Rugby tournament

A new addition for the 2024 edition of this intercultural sporting event will be a rugby tournament aimed specifically at girls and women of all ages who wish to explore a new, highly social sport. During this Touch Rugby, which emphasises thinking and teamwork, there are no tackles, just simple touches. The competition will be supervised by experienced referees and players who will give a brief introduction and explain the basic rules.

The tournament will be organised by RCL Lightning – Touch Rugby section of Luxembourg Rugby Club.

Activities for all ages at Bike Park Boy Konen

Numerous cycling activities are also planned from 12:00 at the cycle park Boy Konen: Table-Line, Enduro-Track, North-Shore, Pumptrack and BMX-Track. Registrations will take place the same day from 11:00. Bicycles will be made available to participants while stock lasts. The minimum age for participation is ten years old.

A day for the entire family

Throughout the day, various activities will be offered for all ages: sports workshops and demonstrations, music and dances from the communities present and activities for children, among others. In addition, numerous food stands will allow spectators and participants to discover the specialties of different countries and enjoy an eclectic culinary journey.

Individuals or teams wishing to participate in “Meetings without Borders” and associations or groups wishing to offer an event or a stand can register from 24 February 2024 on rsf.vdl.lu, by email (rsf@optin.lu) or by tel.: (6917-12700), subject to availability.

Furthermore, the "Meetings without Borders" team will be present at the Festival of Migration, Cultures and Citizenship (Festival des Migrations, des Cultures et de la Citoyenneté) on 24 and 25 February 2024 at Luxexpo The Box in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, where registration is also possible. Participation in the sporting event is free.
