Chronicle.lu has published a new Community Directory in both print and online format.

Launched in 2012, Chronicle.lu has been providing an online information service to the international anglophone community across the Grand Duchy, focussing on publishing timely news across a wide range of topics, reporting on events and happenings organised by the business and social communities, and also maintaining a comprehensive event calendar.

The printed Community Directory, in addition to the directory entries according to categories and sub-categories, also includes a number of informative / reference articles on topics such as About Luxembourg, Emergency Contacts, Luxembourgish traditions, Luxembourgish cuisine and top tourist spots, as well as healthcare, transport and recycling.

The Community Directory is designed as a reference tool for living and working in Luxembourg. With circa 50% of the population of the Grand Duchy being non-Luxembourgish and therefore comprising the international community, and the majority being here to work in the European Institutions or Financial Services sector, as well as English having become the lingua franca among the international community here, the Chronicle.lu audience is continuing to grow in importance.

Where can one get a printed copy of the Community Directory 2023/2024? In addition to the online version being available at https://chronicle.lu/directory, printed copies are available a number of locations including Home from Home (148 Rte d'Arlon, Strassen) and should also be available in municial offices shortly.

CONTENT

Chronicle.lu provides timely and quality News on Luxembourg and the Greater Region, covering current affairs, politics, business, sport, culture and community and addresses issues affecting living and working in the Grand Duchy, plus international news. Navigation is made simple using categories and subcategories.

It also includes Reviews (films, drama productions, concerts and restaurants) and a comprehensive Events Calendar of business, culture, social and community events. In addition, sponsored blog posts (Opinion) are a key feature of Chronicle.lu.

The Community Directory lists organisations, etc., structured by categories and sub-categories; they have been selected primarily because they are actively involved in the business and/or social life of the international community in Luxembourg. Many have been created and/or are supported by members of the international community which add to the melting-pot fabric of the Grand Duchy.

FREE OF CHARGE

All access to Chronicle.lu for users is free of charge. Registration is required for some services, including receiving the eNewsletter (6 days/week).

INTERNATIONAL BAZAAR

The Bazar International (International Bazaar) is the largest community event held in Luxembourg, annually. At Chronicle.lu, we were delighted to partner with them for the launch of the Community Directory.

BUSINESS

The international business community is marked by many Chambers of Commerce, some of which started off as business clubs. Some are more active than others, with activities ranging from business luncheons to evening presentations / panel discussions, often with cultural components. While some conduct their affairs in their national language, English is used frequently. Besides the international chambers, we have also included a sub-category here of Co-working Spaces (which includes serviced offices) as the innovation and entrepreneurial sector has grown considerably over the past few years, and these are places where individuals and small companies can go to work alone, collaborate and schedule meetings.

SOCIAL

The international social community in Luxembourg has evolved considerably over recent decades and comprises both established as well as new organisations. Clubs & Associations, including Drama and Choral groups, as well as Uniformed Organisations, have formed the backbone of the international community in the Grand Duchy over the years, with the number of Churches growing; we have also included (university and secondary school) Alumni and Toastmasters, where people can improve their public speaking skills.

CULTURE

Luxembourg offers a range of diverse cultural opportunities encompassing both local/traditional/historical as well as emerging offerings aimed at - or initiated/organised by -  the international community. Films are screened in their original language and are sub-titled, and the stand-up comedy scene is emerging. The sub-categories listed here are venues / locations / settings where both business and social organisations organise events / outings, and can also be visited and explored privately. They include Chateaux, Museums & Art Galleries, Libraries, Comedy and Concert Venues, as well as Theatres / Performing Arts Venues and where one can do Wine / Cider / Beer Tastings. In addition, Cinemas and Film Festivals are also listed.

SPORTS

Like Culture, Sports is very important for the international community here. A number of clubs were created by members of the international community here, with some sports being introduced to the Grand Duchy for the first time, from Rugby and Cricket to Lacrosse, Squash, American Football, Cheerleading and Gaelic Games... On the other hand, Football has been established in the Grand Duchy and normally members of the international community join local clubs close to where they live (therefore, they have not been listed). Winter Sports are quite popular here, with clubs established for Ice Hockey, Curling, Figure Skating, Ice Dance and Speedskating. Other sport sub-categories include Badminton, Fitness, Polo, Swimming and Tennis with those new to the scene including Bouldering, Roller Derby and Pickleball.

OTHER

We decided to add a number of other sub-categories which would not fit into the four preceding main categories. These are all relevant to the extended international community here in the Grand Duchy and are places or organisations where one can talk with people and find out more about the social and business community here. Embassies & Consulates are listed, as are International (English-language) Schools, Language Training, (Expat) Shops, Pubs and Consumer Rights organisations as well as Support Groups and Animal Welfare organisations.

BAZAAR

There are 50+ individual stands at the Bazar International (International Bazaar), most of which are country-specific, selling traditional food and drink, as well as country-specific produce, including handcrafts and many items that can be used as Christmas presents. Many stands also run tombolas (raffles) where prizes can include flights and other sponsored items. In addition to the country stands, others include a Creperie & Bar, Malle aux trésors (Treasure Chest), Round Table, Salon de Thé (Tea Room), Lions Club and Backstand (Christmas delicacies). The stands are all run on a volunteer basis, a central theme of the event.
