Performances of Alfred de Musset’s theatre piece “Il faut qu'une porte soit ouverte ou fermée” are currently being held at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg, starting yesterday and between 27-29 April and on 2 and 7 May 2017.

One of the last plays by the French poet and playwright Alfred de Musset, “Il faut qu'une porte soit ouverte ou fermée” (literally “A door must be opened or closed”) tells the story of a marquise and a count who try to hide their love for each other.

One day in winter, the marquise leaves her door "open" to those who want to visit her, when her neighbor, a count, arrives for no apparent reason. Banalities, disappointments and speeches of seduction are going to be exchanged. But it is a kind of duel. And the door can open at any moment.

The marquise and the count try to conceal from each other a reciprocal love, with the former setting out to test the latter’s fidelity. The count sees his replies cut off: castration of the word-seduction which offers to this piece a double movement. The door will open and close several times, until it finally closes...

Alfred de Musset is now regarded as one of the great romantic writers of France, whose theatre and lyrical poetry show an extreme sensitivity, an interrogation on purity and debauchery, an exaltation of love and a sincere expression of sorrow. Sincerity that refers to his tumultuous life that emblematically illustrates his relationship with George Sand.

The play is led by Sophie Langevin who has proved to be a director who, while working with unfailing precision and commitment, is willing to "open the door" to bring the spectator's imagination into the picture.

The show starts at 20:00 on each day.

Tickets cost €20 for adults, €8 for under 26s and €1.50 with a Kulturpass.
