Details: Luxembourg's national commemoration day is dedicated to the memory of the struggle of the people of Luxembourg during the occupation from 1940 to 1945; on this occasion, several events will be organised across Luxembourg this coming Sunday 9 October 2016.
Ceremony at the National Solidarity monument Luxembourg
At 10:30, HRH the Grand Duke will lay a wreath at the National Monument of Luxembourg Solidarity (Kanounenhiwwel); he will be met by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo, the Prime Minister and Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, the mayor of the city of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, and the Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg army, General Roman Mancinelli. HRH the Grand Duke will then revive the flame of remembrance and will salute the flag bearers, the Luxembourg authorities, ambassadors residing in Luxembourg, the Committee for the Memory of World War II, representatives of associations of veterans, the resistance, the conscripted and victims of the Holocaust, as well as students of the University of Luxembourg and students from the Athénée de Luxembourg.
Ceremony at the Place de la Constitution
After the ceremony at the National Monument of Solidarity, at 11:00, wreaths will be placed at the monument of remembrance in the Place de la Constitution by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo, the Prime Minister and Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, and the mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, as well as the Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg army, General Roman Mancinelli, and the Director General of the Grand Ducal Police, Philippe Schrantz.
Ceremony at the National Monument of Resistance and Deportation (Hinzerter Kräiz)
At 11:30, the Prime Minister Xavier Bettel will deliver a speech at the national monument of Resistance and Deportation. A representative of the Catholic Church, Father Patrick Muller, the chief rabbi of Luxembourg, Alain Nacache, and the pastor of the Protestant Church of Luxembourg, Volker Strauss, will then proceed with the blessing of the grave at the National Monument of Resistance and Deportation (Hinzerter Kräiz). Wreaths will be laid by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo, the Prime Minister and Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, and by the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, in the presence of authorities and ambassadors.
