Details: Soweto's Finest, with a group of 5 dancers, will perform at the Grand Theatre de la Ville de Luxembourg from Tuesday 2 February to Wednesday 3 February 2016, with performances daily at 20:00 (1 hour duration).
Soweto’s Finest are self-taught dancers barely out of adolescence, their studio is the streets of the gigantic slum of Alexandra near Johannesburg. These young dancers merge Zulu dancing and Michael Jackson, with an African imaginary borrowed from the movies of the 21st century. Due to immediacy of globalization, this new generation of African dance was quite simply thrown forward into a different arena.
The youngest dancer is 18, choreographer Thomas Bongani Chauke is the eldest at 26; their youthfulness plays to their advantage and they dance with an unrivalled freedom and passion. They ignore traditional rules and guidelines and their choreography is their all-consuming addiction to dance; dancing to survive in a society that has abandoned them, dancing to ensure a place as a human being worthy of attention and respect. Their dance is a symptom of a society in turmoil and they dance with a passion that moves beyond the artificial boundaries of ancient and modern.
