Details: In light of the upcoming annual World Food Day (16 October), the next Hungry Planet conference organised by SLOW FOOD Luxembourg, Fairtrade Luxembourg and SOS Faim has been announced with the following theme: “The cost of food – towards the end of hunger?”. It will take place on Wednesday 15 October at the Carré Rotondes cultural centre in Hollerich starting at 18:30.

Inoussa Maiga, from Burkina Faso, a journalist and blogger specialising in African agriculture will be the evening’s special guest. He is known as “Googol Farmer”, as he is fully involved in issues related to artisanal fishing and the rural world. This leads him to tie in causes such as food security, land tenure security, the promotion of small-scale fishing and the development of farming knowledge.

Topical discussions on hunger in the world will be held, with the caterer Steffen designing a menu of essential foods inspired particularly by West Africa.

The fact that farmers and their families (ie. The producers of food) are the majority in the near billion people that suffer from hunger is a huge paradox. With perhaps 9 billion people to feed by 2050, how should the challenge be met?

Also, the documentary “To Feed at all costs?” will discuss that from Niger to India through to the United States, there are factors that are redefining food aid paradigms and will explore the emerging options for the future of agriculture. Moreover, the idea that ‘hi-tech’ nutritional products are in fact only enhancing the risk of exacerbating the dependence on countries of the South regarding ad hoc solutions and jeopardising investment in food crops will be debated.

Some of the menu created from staple foods in use worldwide, include:

- Millet and Bulgur Wheat Tabouleh, Mint, Parsley and Coriander, Lime
- Ethiopian-style White Cabbage, cumin and turmeric
- Sweet Potato cream, coconut milk, ginger, cardamom
- Plantain Banana tajine, candied oranges, beans, peas and other legumes
- Small custard cream in chocolate, tapioca and cinnamon
