In its latest report, Luxembourg's statistical institute, STATEC, has confirmed that salaried employment continued to grow into the fourth quarter of 2021.

The number of salaried employees in Luxembourg grew by 1.0% in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to the third quarter. Over one year, this represents an increase of 3.6%.

Trade, transport, accommodation and catering activities showed the strongest quarterly growth, up 1.0% compared to the third quarter of 2021.

Administration and other public services were up 5.4% over one year, as well as specialised activities and support services which grew 3.8% over one year, were among the most dynamic branches during this period.

For administration and other public services, STATEC accounted this favourable development from the central administration and social action for the elderly and for the disabled without accommodation.

In the branch of specialised activities and support services, the activities of the head offices as well as the accounting activities recorded the most significant growth. Over one year, the number of employees increased in all branches of activity.

In terms of quarterly changes, trade, transport, accommodation and catering activities were up 1.3% compared to the third quarter of 2021 whilst administration and other public services also recorded 1.3% net growth.

The number of cross-border workers increased (up 1.3% compared to the previous quarter) slightly more than that of residents (up 0.6%). Year-on-year, the number of non-European Union residents increased by up 10.8%, compared to 2.7% for Luxembourg residents.
