The national campaign "Make Bananas Fair" officially began on Wednesday 27 September 2017 to promote the presence of the Fairtrade banana on the Luxembourg market.

The "Make Bananas Fair" campaign organised by the NGO Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg and its partners, including distributors, supermarkets and business restaurants, will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the current situation regarding fairtrade bananas from small producers. Introduced on the Luxembourg market in 1999, the Fairtrade banana has become the preferred Fairtrade product in Luxembourg, representing one out of three consumed bananas in the country. The objective is to continue this rise and reach a market share of 50% by 2020.

Regarding current difficulties, producers in Latin America and especially the banana producers of Peru and Dominican Republic have been confronted in recent months with terrible weather conditions that have destroyed a large part of their plantations. The "Make Bananas Fair" campaign, organised from 24 September to 8 October 2017 therefore aims to educate consumers on the current situation of banana producers and the contribution of Fairtrade cooperatives during natural disasters.

Both consumers and distributors, public and private buyers are invited to join the movement by adopting the simple daily gesture of choosing sustainably fair trade bananas in order to guarantee producers the respect they deserve for their hard work and a secure future for themselves and their families.
