This new year, Luxembourg-ville’s Grand Théâtre will play host to a contemporary adaptation of Leoš Janáček’s Diary of One Who Disappeared on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 January 2018 at 20:00.
No stranger to the Grand Théâtre, audiences will be familiar with director Ivo van Hove’s previous productions, After the Rehearsal, Persona, Antigone, Vu du Pont and Obsession. Now he has returned with a new emotionally charged production of Diary of One Who Disappeared, Leoš Janáček’s poetic love cycle about a village boy called Janik wo falls in love with the gypsy girl Zefka and gives up everything to follow her.
Janáček’s masterpiece was the starting point for this contemporary adaptation by the playwright Krystian Lada and composer Annelies Van Parys. Van Hove has adapted Janáček’s work to give it a contemporary twist. He also uses extracts from Janáček’s own love letters to his younger muse to create an intimate self-portrait, and features Ed Lyon on tenor, actor Hugo Koolschijn and the De Munt choir for this performance about alienation.
The performance will be in Czech with French and German subtitles.
