The Luxembourg postal sector’s revenue increased by 4.9% to €159 million in 2016 compared to 2015.

The Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR) has published a report on the evolution of the postal market in Luxembourg. The postal sector's total revenue amounted to €159 million in 2016, an increase of 4.9% compared to 2015. This turnover includes, on the one hand, the turnover of mail items postal charges or "correspondence items" amounting to €119.62 million and, on the other hand, the turnover of parcels and express mail totalling €39.05 million. In 2016, this sector counted 26 postal service providers, employing more than 1,860 people. In general, the number of providers has not changed much in recent years and the market shares of the different providers remained stable.

The total traffic in the postal mail market, ie national traffic and cross-border traffic (in- and out-bound) amounted to 191 million units processed in 2016. It decreased 4.8% between 2015 and 2016. In general, the trend has been downward since 2013. With regard to domestic shipments, the number of postal mail items has also been steadily declining since 2013. The average decrease annual between 2013 and 2016 is 1%, with a more pronounced decrease in 2016 of 4% to reach 142 million mailings.

Moreover, inbound cross-border parcel traffic has been steadily increasing since 2014. In 2016, it represented 58% of the total traffic, which amounts to 8 million parcels. In Luxembourg, incoming parcel traffic is much higher than national traffic, which amounts to 26% of total traffic in 2016. At the national level, the volumes of parcels handled by Post Luxembourg are much higher than those of other countries. providers. For the entire cross-border market, five providers provided more than 90% of the market.
