On Thursday 10 March 2016, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) signed a collaboration agreement with the Luxembourg Government to run until 2018.

The agreement was signed by Minister of the Environment, Carole Dieschbourg, and LIST Director-General, Prof. Dr. Gabriel Crean, which will see the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure (MDDI) support the LIST in the implementation of environmental, national and European policies, as well as establish research programmes and projects in the environmental field.

The partnership with the MDDI dates back to 1997, when it gave LIST's predecessor, the Centre de Recherche Public Henri Tudor, the task of advising environmental technology companies on the application of the best techniques in compliance with the 'Commodo/Incommodo' law, leading to the creation of the Centre de Ressources des Technologies pour l'Environnement (CRTE).

In conjunction with this, partnerships were also agreed with the Centre de Recherche Public Gabriel Lippmann, particularly in the areas of water management and protection and biodiversity monitoring. These activities were integrated into the LIST upon its creation on 1 January 2016 through a merger of the two research centres. The recently signed agreement aims to align the various projects, but above all to increase the impact, recognition, visibility and synergy between both partners.

The themes covered under the agreement include best available techniques, industrial emissions and the European REACH/CLP regulation, as well as themes related to climate change, renewable energy and air emissions. Water resource management and biodiversity have also been highlighted. LIST announced that it will be mobilising interdisciplinary expertise to support the Ministry in developing holistic approaches to environmental protection, in the spirit of the circular economy, whilst dually taking into account the socio-economic context of Luxembourg.
