Dr Michael Shermer, one of America’s foremost skeptics and thinkers is giving a talk in Luxembourg on 23 May, titled “Heavens on Earth: The Quest for Immortality and Perfectibility”.

Dr Shermer is the head of one of America's leading science organisations, the Skeptics Society, a monthly columnist for Scientific American and a New York Times bestselling author of books such as Why People Believe Weird Things. He is also the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, and a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University where he teaches Skepticism 101.

As a public intellectual Dr Shermer regularly contributes editorials, reviews and essays to the Wall Street Journal, Science, Nature, and other publications, appeared on shows such as The Colbert Report, Larry King Live, and Oprah Winfrey, and is the only person in history to have given four TED talks, which have been voted as 

He is the author of New York Times bestsellers Why People Believe Weird Things and The Believing Brain, Why Darwin Matters, The Science of Good and Evil, and The Moral Arc. 

His next book is Heavens on Earth: The Scientific Search for the Afterlife, Immortality & Utopia, in which he argues that science and reason, rather than religious beliefs about life after death, are the best means we have to create a more just and free world, leading humanity towards a better future.

Dr Shermer will speak at the Batiment des Sciences on the Limpertsberg Campus of the University of Luxembourg from 20:00 to 21:30.
