Thursday 15 March 2018 saw the opening of the new temporary exhibition of the Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art (MNHA): “Le lieu céleste. Les Étrusques et leurs dieux. Le sanctuaire fédéral d’Orvieto“ (The heavenly place. The Etruscans and their gods. The Orvieto Federal Sanctuary).

This unique exhibition has been produced in close collaboration with the Association Campo della Fiera - Onlus, the Caisse d'Epargne Foundation of the City of Orvieto, the Archaeology Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence, of Umbria and the Museum Pole of Umbria, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Luxembourg.

At the centre of this project are the spectacular results of the excavations conducted since 2000 under the direction of Professor Simonetta Stopponi at Campo della Fiera at the foot of the city of Orvieto. These have uncovered an extraordinary archaeological complex that stretches over five hectares and includes several temples, a sacred path and a large area reserved for offerings to the gods. This is unquestionably the famous Fanum Voltumnae described by ancient sources, the great federal sanctuary of the league of the twelve major Etruscan cities.

Through the archaeological structures and countless objects (statuettes, terracotta, reliefs, ceramics...) the visitor is invited to plunge into the cultural, religious and aesthetic universe of this mysterious Etruscan people.

The exhibition will take place until 2 September 2018.
