The Automobile Club du Luxembourg (ACL) and Opti-vue have teamed up to offer three tests for safe driving as part of this year's lighting and tyre campaign, running from 15 October to 15 November 2018.
ACL has joined forces with the optician Opti-vue on the occasion of La Sécurité Routière's annual lighting and tyre campaign and toghether they are organising three free tests including tyres, headlights and eyesight for the safety of drivers and other road users.
Reduced visibility, risk of morning frost, slippery roads... motorists are often faced with many obstacles at this time of year. To ensure road safety then, the ACL and Opti-vue are organising checkpoints throughout the country to check the condition of drivers' tyres, car headlights and, new to the 2018 edition, the eyesight of drivers.
Tyre control is paramount, especially this season when dead leaves on the road, rain and falling temperatures can serve as barriers to motorist safety if the tyres are not in good condition. The ACL will thus check if the tyre material is still in order as well as the age, profile and state of wear. As a reminder, according to the law the minimum depth of the profile is 1.6 mm, but the ACL has recommended, for safety reasons, not to go below 4 mm. They have also advised using winter tyres as soon as temperatures drop below 7 degrees celsius and, as required by law in Luxembourg, in conditions such as ice, snow or frost throughout the year.
When controlling lighting, the ACL will test the condition and position of all lights as well as monitor the condition of the reflectors and glass. Indeed, the various headlamps must be positioned so as not to dazzle drivers coming in the opposite direction while providing maximum visibility to the driver. Meanwhile, in the event of fog, it is advisable to reduce speed and, if visibility is less than 50 metres, fog lamps must also be switched on and a safe distance from the vehicle ahead must be maintained.
In collaboration with Opti-vue, drivers will also have the opportunity to test their eyesight. Using professional equipment, Opti- vue can make a first diagnosis of the state of motorists' eyesight and advise if any problems are noticeable. Having good eyesight is as much a safety factor as the state of the vehicle.
The ACL and Opti-vue will conduct tyre, lighting and eyesight checks at various locations in Luxembourg from 10:00-18:00 on the following dates: 15 October at Cactus Remich; 16 October at Deichwiesen car park in Ettelbrück; 18 October at Cactus Mersch; 23 October at Cactus Redange/Attert; 25 October Cactus Kayl; 29 October Cactus Hobbi Diekirch; 30 October at Cactus Bascharage; 31 October at Cactus Bettembourg Schéleck; 2 November at Massen shopping sentre in Wemperhardt; 5 November at Les Arcades Niederanven shopping centre; 6 November at Cactus Bereldange; 7 November at Cactus Howald; 8 November at Langwies Junglinster shopping centre; 9 November at Knauf Pommerloch shopping centre.
At the ACL in Bertrange, the controls will take place on Saturdays 20 and 27 October and from 15-19 October 2018.
