Set in London in the 1950s; renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is fastidious in his approach to designing and making dresses for his upper-class clientele, including royalty, film stars, socialites, etc. His daily routine rarely changes and he lives and works with his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville), with seamstresses coming in to work every morning on his creations for The House of Woodcock.

One day he meets Alma (Vicky Krieps) whose innocence and charm sweeps him off his feet. She becomes his muse and lover and starts to become a fixture in the household. But Reynolds is stuck in his ways and Alma has to fit in. She cares for him but finds it difficult to get time alone. When she does, her plans do not always go as she would have hoped.

A wonderful tale with arguably the world's top actor, Day-Lewis, and Luxembourg's own Krieps; they bring the audience on a story of character deveolpment set in a world of glamour. On the one hand, he is a strict disciplinarian and has got to where he is by hard work and bloody-mindedness (not forgetting a great talent too), and can almost be considered obsessive-compulsive. Then, along comes Alma who is to become a major part of his life, with she and love and emotions destabilise the structure and order that had been there until now.

Nominated for 8 Oscars.
