Strangers @ TnL;

On Monday 22 January 2018, the American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg (AMCHAM) got the opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal of the upcoming World Premier of the production "Strangers" being performed at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg (TNL) in a collaboration between the TNL and the Circle Theater of New York.

Following a buffet lunch - officially an ABAL luncheon - attendees got to learn about the play from director Anne Simon before they were able to sit in on the rehearsal involving a few scenes from the play. This was an eye-opening experience where AMCHAM members could experience first-hand theatre professionals preparing for not only a stage production, but a world premier at that.
Strangers explores the themes of connection, choice and mortality as they relate to modern threats of climate change, surveillance, the spread of disease and the fears of a rapidly shifting world. Warnings from the past become a guide for how to approach the future – and patterns through time are revealed.

Following a previous production of Hansel and Gretel in 2015, this is second such collaboration between the TNL and the Circle Theater of New York.

On Monday, Anne Simon and her colleagues talked about various social and cultural issues upon which they base their productions, for example child soldiers. She explained that the international collaboration has been made possible by the Luxembourg embassy in the US and the US embassy in Luxembourg, as well as with the support of both chambers of commerce.

She addressed the topic of the play “Strangers” which opens this Saturday 27 January; she explained that this production is different. Normally such projects involve 4-6 weeks of practice and rehearsals, with this taking longer (6-8 weeks). In the Circle Theater, they engage everyone to co-author the production, including writing and character development; they also like the audience to be as close to the (on-stage) action as possible.

Performances on Sat 27 Jan, Tue 30 Jan, Thu 1 Feb, Fri 2 Feb at 20:00, Sun 4 Feb @ 17:00.
