On Saturday afternoon, three people lost their lives in an accident on the A7 motorway.

The accident happened at around 15:30 when a car containing a driver and three passengers was being driven northwards was between the Stafelter and Grouft tunnels. For reasons yet to be determined, the car left the road and drove against the crash barriers, the impact launching the car into the air. It landed against a motorway sign, and came to a rest on its roof.

The emergency services were on the scene quickly but could not save the lives of three of the occupants who were declared dead at the scene of the accident. The fourth occupant was seriously injured and was taken to hospital by ambulance after being treated to first aid at the scene.

The two lanes going north on the A7 motorway were blocked to other traffic during the rescue and salvage operations and were not reopened until 21:00.

The public prosecutor ordered a forensics examination of the scene to determine the exact circumstances leading to the accident. The police have called on witnesses to the accident to contact them at tel: 113​
