On the occasion of International Youth Day yesterday, Statec took a look at the daily activities of young residents in Luxembourg.

The study published on 8 August 2017, on International Youth Day, revealed that in 2014, girls aged 10-24 spent four hours a day on recreational and leisure activities, whilst boys of the same age spent 30 to 90 minutes more. Such differences are attributed to the fact that girls typically spend more time moving around, caring for themselves and doing household chores.

In the context of recreational activities, most of this time was spent mainly in front of screens. Whilst the boys studied typically spent more time doing this, their female counterparts tended to spend more time each day on their appearance, washing and dressing (10 to 20 minutes) and carrying out household tasks (20 to 30 minutes).

As for sleeping patterns, girls and boys were found to sleep as much as each other, around 9 hours and 15 minutes a day for 15-24 years and 10 hours 10 minutes for the younger 10-14 year olds.

Duties also occupy the time of these young people, with homework taking up as much time for boys as girls, especially at weekends. 15-19 year olds devote two hours a day to homework, compared with 30 minutes for 10-14 year olds. During the week, the two age groups devote one hour 10 minutes per day.
