This June and July 2016, refugees and the resident population in Luxembourg will be performing an interdisciplinary and intercultural show as part of a new project by MASKéNADA.

"Letters from Luxembourg" brings together asylum seekers and professional and amateur artists performing movement, music and lyrics under the direction of Sylvia Camarda and Serge Tonnar.

The project, which has received the support of the Grand Duchess Charlotte National Relief Work, is based on letters that refugees have written from Luxembourg: "real or imagined messages, letters home, love letters, even excerpts from official letters from immigration lawyers".

The idea of the performances is to show that these papers are support for Luxembourg's new arrivals, but that they are not defined by a paper trail devoid of true expression and that, instead, these refugees of today are the ancestors of the new Luxembourgers to come. "They are the people of the new Luxembourg" the event description reads.

Sylvia Camarda and Serge Tonnar are both active in intercultural projects incorporating refugees and the resident population, primarily through the Luxembourg-based NGO "Mir wëllen iech ons Heemecht weisen" ("We want to show you our homeland" in English). Created by Serge Tonnar together with Rita Neu, Sabine Tonnar and Misch Donven, the NGO coordinates cultural projects, events and workshops for a variety of audiences, inside refugee centres.

Citing cultural and artistic expression as one of the most effective ways to create bonds and opportunities, the initiative aims to show how refugees and residents can collaborate to create new content for society through the international language of the arts.

Performances will be given at 20:00 on 28 and 30 June and 1, 3 and 6 July 2016 at the Théâtre des Capucins. Entry costs €20, €15 or €8 for adults, €8 for children and is free with a Kulturpass. For more information and tickets, click here.
