On Friday 8 December 2017, Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg's Prime Minister and Minister of State, together with Fernand Etgen, Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, invited representatives of the agricultural, viticultural and horticultural professions to a new meeting in the context of the "Assises agricoles" (agricultural assistance).

On the agenda were the current economic situation of the agriculture sector (which was considered to be much better than in previous years), the state of progress of legislative work on a number of draft laws (protection of nature, accreditation of a quality system or certification of agricultural products, leases on farms, sustainable management of rural property) as well as various current issues, including the future direction of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2020 following the recent communication by European Commissioner Phil Hogan on the subject.

Following this exchange of views, the participants agreed to set up a forum for the future for agriculture as early as 2018. This forum should enable the agricultural, viticultural and horticultural sector to prepare together with those responsible of the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, and also together with other interested actors, to closely follow the discussions on the future of the CAP and prepare with confidence and on time required, the relevant national legislation.
