The 2017 summer harvest has started across the Grand Duchy, with the Moulins de Kleinbettingen busy over the week-end as the number of tractors queuing to deposit their loads of harvested cereals.

Since the second half of May, the weather has been very warm and mainly dry in Luxembourg which should account for a good harvest, at least to date. The harvest is usually concluded by the end of August each year in Luxembourg.

In 2016, cereal harvests across the Grand Duchy were down 30% on average; agriculture experienced much rain and humidity during the main 2016 growing season, which encouraged cereal diseases. Prices last year therefore were down 10-15%.

Each year during the summer harvest, the Moulins de Kleinbettingen receive between 15,000 and 20,000 tons of cereals: 50% comes from Luxembourg farms with the rest from France and Germany, and just some from Belgium. The grains received during the harvest period accounts for circa 20% of the grain processed by the mill, with the rest being delivered to the mill throughout the year.

Luxembourg's Produit Terroir programme started 17 years ago has resulted in the possibility of producing wheat representing the environment and resistant to extreme weather conditions.
