The Luxembourg Red Cross has issued a call for donations to support the thousands of flood victims in Sierra Leone.

Torrential rains, major floods and landslides have affected several areas in Sierra Leone, including the one around the capital Freetown. In this region alone, the first estimate mentions more than 400 deaths, along with 3,000 families who have lost their homes and/or contact with relatives. These people are without electricity and cut off from all means of communication.

In light of this natural disaster, Sierra Leone Red Cross volunteers are currently in a race against time to find survivors in the murderous mudslide.

In order to provide direct support, the Luxembourg Red Cross decided to provide €50,000 from its emergency fund to meet the immediate needs of the affected populations. Moreover, in order to take a more sustainable approach, it has provided the country with a construction expert, an area of expertise of the Luxembourg Red Cross, to assess the possibilities for sustainable reconstruction.

The Luxembourg Red Cross is committed to improving the quality of responses to victims of humanitarian crises, in particular by contributing to a prevention program through the construction of sustainable housing.

In order to continue these efforts, the Luxembourg Red Cross urges the public to make donations, either by bank transfer to the account CCP LU52 1111 0000 1111 0000 or by credit card on www.croix-rouge.lu, with the message "Emergency aid Sierra Leone".
