On Tuesday evening, Luxembourg hosted Portugal in a football friendly at the Stade Josy Barthel in Luxembourg city; while there was little between the teams, the difference was in the 2-0 scoreline in favour of the visitors.

The home team were in buoyant mood following their injury-time defeat of Greece in Differdange on Friday evening, but with the visitors being Portugal, a full house was expected courtesy of the Grand Duchy's large migrant population, with a sell-out announced in advance.

Portugal came into this game have been on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline on Friday when losing to Russia.

While the weather did not exactly co-operate, with stormy conditions before and during the game, the game provided some level of entertainment. The goals came from a solid strike from Andres Andres in the first half, after excellent work by Vierinha, and a mis-hit free kick from substitute Nani late in the second half beat the home keeper.

In addition to the in-form Aurelien Joachim, Stefano Bensi also went close for the home side, with the two combining well. Luxembourg had legitimate claims for a second-half penalty but a hand-ball in the box by Neto but the referee ignored their claims.

Both teams had chances in an open game, but the visitors made two of theirs count. The weather deteriorated in the second half with the surface and ball becoming increasingly slippery, and substitutions disrupted any rhythm there had been.
