In 2014, Luxembourg participated in the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), which has found that 15.6% of the Grand Duchy’s adult population is obese.

The EHIS, which was conducted with 4,004 men and women aged 15 years and over residing in Luxembourg, revealed that 15.6% of those aged 18 and over are obese. This is close to the European average of 15.9%.

Also regarding obesity, nutrition and physical activity, about one-third of Luxembourg’s population is overweight with 35.8% of adults not eating fruit and vegetables daily. This is slightly higher than the European average of 34.0%.

Approximately one in tw0 Europeans- 49.8%, according to estimated EU data- do not engage in endurance physical activity compared with 37.5% in Luxembourg. On the other hand, 40.8% of the Luxembourg population practice more than 150 minutes of endurance physical activity per week compared to 29.9% of the European Union.

Concerning the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, 20.5% of people aged 15 and over are smokers, which equals one out of five Luxembourg residents, compared with 24.0% in the European Union. Moreover, Luxembourg residents aged 15 and over (40.6%) are more likely to be drinking on a weekly basis than on average in the EU (29.6%).
