The Pierre Werner Institute is hosting a conference titled “Europe in Question,” focusing on the work of Austrian author Robert Menasse at Neumünster Abbey on 6 April 2017.

The conference, followed by a public debate with the public, is being organised in cooperation with the Grand-Ducal Institute and the Austrian Embassy in Luxembourg and is rooted in the personality and work of Robert Menasse, an Austrian author born in 1954. Since his first novel, Sinnliche Gewissheit, is an autobiographical view on his stay in Brazil where he was an assistant at the University of São Paulo, he has picked up a string of awards for his work over the years. His latest work is titled An end to nationalisms. For a Europe of Peace and a New Democracy (2012).

Menasse’s latest award was given in 2015, when he won the European Book Prize for his essay “Der Europäische Landbote”, an examination of European institutions in which he rejects the preconceived idea that the defence of nationally-centred interests is more damaging to the European ideal than European bureaucracy, asking how can we have confidence in the European Union if Europe is undergoing unprecedented crises and both politicians and citizens of member states are challenging its existence?

The conference will be preceded by an introduction by Prof. Lucien Kayser, president of the arts and letters section of the Grand-Ducal Institute.

The conference, in German, will be at the J. Ensch Hall, Neumünster Abbey, 28, Münster Street, Luxembourg-Grund at 19:00 on 6 April. Entrance is €10, €5 with a discount, or €1.50 with a Kulturpass. For more information, see the website: www.ipw.lu
