The European School Luxembourg II (ESLII) were crowned the champions of this year’s biennial Eurosport competition, which this time was hosted by the European School in Brussels. The event has been a key part of the European Schools’ calendar since 2001, with sixteen schools from across Europe each sending 30 athletes to take part in a selection of events that are chosen at the host’s discretion.

This year, the European School Brussels chose football, volleyball, badminton and aquathlon in which the team from ESLII made hay against their competition. Taking the 2nd places in aquathlon and badminton, 3d place for the girls football team, 4th for the boys volleyball team and 5th for the girls, while the boys football team took 6th place, sufficient to give ESLII a ten-point lead over the rest of the field.

The team coordinator, Isabelle Decarniere, attributed the result to the team’s consistent training, great team spirit, and “a bit of luck.”

The team feted their victory with a small celebration and presentation at the school, and there will be another small celebration at the “fête de l’école” in May, while the school’s principal and vice-principal recognised the students’ performance with a Certificate of Excellence.

The next Eurosport in Varese, in Italy, and the success of this year’s team is already spurring on the next generation. “I think our success this year will definitely motivate other students to get involved and to try out for the next event. Students are definitely more conscious about and interested in the event,” said Ms Decarniere.
