University of Luxembourg’s rector, Dr Rainer Klump, has resigned his position prompting the Ministry of Education to issue their warm thanks for his commitment as head of the university and to wish him success for personal and professional future. 

According to the university, the rector is reorienting his career beyond the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The Board of Governors and the University community thank him for his commitment and wish him all the best for his personal and professional endeavours.

Since taking office in January 2015, Rector Klump has contributed to the development and consolidation of the University of Luxembourg. Among the highlights of his tenure were the installation of a large part of the University's teaching and research activities at the new site in Belval for the academic year 2015/16, the creation of the third interdisciplinary centre devoted to contemporary history, and the creation of the logistics centre, in collaboration with MIT. In addition, the University has actively participated in the creation of the new legal structure UniGR a.s.b.l., which brings together the six universities of the Greater Region.

In 2016, the university’s third evaluation, which extended for the first time to the entirety of its research activities, show that the university had succeeded in establishing its reputation in a number of areas, while positively impacting Luxembourg’s society and economy. That year was also marked by strengthening of the university’s cooperation with public research centres, notably through the recruitment of joint professors and the cooperation agreement in the framework of doctoral training.

Rector Klump worked to strengthen the international visibility of the university and of higher education and public research in Luxembourg in general. The University of Luxembourg was awarded position 178 in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2016 ranking and ranked eleventh in the THE 2017 ranking of the top 150 universities under 50.
