On Monday evening, the British Ambassador to Luxembourg, John Marshall, held a reception at his residence to showcase his #LuxUKLinks initiative, a series of interesting facts about the links between Luxembourg and Britain.

Since arriving in the Grand Duchy, Ambassador Marshall has pro-actively explored many corners of Luxembourg, quite often while out running. During this private time, and also while getting to understand the country, he started to tweet twice weekly about interesting facts linking Britain and Luxembourg.

In front of a group of VIPs, including the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, and members of the British and Luxembourg communities, Ambassador Marshall spoke in both Luxembourgish and English.

He stated that people can reflect on the richness of the history between the two countries. He stressed that, irrespective of what happens regarding Brexit, the ties between the two countries will not be weakened.

The exhibition comprises no less than 30 roll-up banners and has already been booked as a travelling exhibition by various municipalities including Walferdange, Hesperdange, Strassen and Luxembourg city, as well as local schools including St George's.

The Ambassador concluded by thanking everyone for their contribution to ensure the initiative became reality.

Prime Minister Bettel thanked Ambassador Marshall for his initiative and acknowledged that the links are historical, spanning the period from Count Sigismund to the present, including references in the Harry Potter's books by British author JK Rowling.

He referred to Brexit and said the decision was one he regrets yet respects. He said that British citizens in Luxembourg and the EU are his priority, before addressing trade and other issues. He stated that he does not want a hard or soft Brexit, but a solution that works.

He recollected the recent visit by the Duchess of Cambridge - who was shown the exbition by Ambassador Marsheall - and stressed that "we were friends, we are friends, and we will continue to be friends".
