On Friday 30 September 2016, the Kinepolis Group has sold the four Belgian Utopolis cinemas located in Aarschot, Lommel, Mechelen and Turnhout to the French group UGC.

On 9 November 2015, the Kinepolis Group in Belgium purchased the Utopolis group from Utopia SA in Luxembourg. The acquisition of the Belgian venues required the approval of the Belgian Competition Authority (ABC).

On 25 March 2016, ABC approved that the Belgian Utopolis cinemas in Mechelen and Aarschot should be sold for further exploitation. Following this decision, the Kinepolis Group acquired the Belgian Utopolis cinemas on 14 April 2016. Since then, the operation of the cinemas was continued in accordance with the conditions imposed by the ABC. Given the conditions imposed by the ABC and the interest of potential buyers, Kinepolis subsequently decided to sell all its Belgian Utopolis activities. The sale of the four Belgian Utopolis cinemas to UGC represents a transaction worth €36.2 million.

Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, stated "It is no secret that we would rather add the four Belgian cinemas to our network, but I'm sure that Utopolis Aarschot, Lommel, Mechelen and Turnhout will address a promising new future in the aegis of UGC. I wish them every success."
