The number of passengers passing through Luxembourg Findel airport went above the 3 million mark in 2016, up 12% on the year before, according to a report from the national statistics agency, STATEC.

According to the report, the rise can be attributed to a number of new airlines adding new routes last year, as well as an increase in the frequency of some existing routes. Thus, despite some minor weaknesses in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2016, passenger traffic swung back up at the end of the year.

Air freight also saw volumes grow bu 8% last year, and Findel is thus now ranked sixth of the top ten major freight airports in the EU, benefitting from a favourable economic climate and the large-scale expansion of Qatar Airways, which doubled its flights in mid-2016.
