The University of Luxembourg is hosting a public lecture on the challenges faced by the European Convention on Human Rights in the context of a pan-European system, led by the University's professor Robert Harmsen.

"The Law and Politics of the European Convention on Human Rights: Facing the Challenges of a Pan-European System" will address the various types of ‘crises’ that are mounting across Europe, in relation to which the Council of Europe's European Court of Human Rights finds itself occupying a central position along the major fault lines.

Contextualising this contemporary reality, the lecture will survey the historical development of the Strasbourg Court, covering both the progressive legitimation of the post-war West European system and the distinctive challenges that it now faces as a pan-European body.

The lecture will be held at the Belval Campus of the University of Luxembourg, at 11.30 on 21 March.
