On Wednesday 25 May 2016, SECURITYMADEIN.LU and the European Consumer Centre (ECC) held an event at Maison de l'Europe explaining the risk of online toys as part of the European Consumer Afternoons.

Dr. Matthew Farcot, responsible for legal affairs with SECURITYMADEIN.LU, first presented the major categories of connect toys, from educational toys to forms of virtual communications. Focusing on the dangers associated with this new generation of toys, Dr. Farcot highlighted the technical risks as well as those related to service providers and third parties.

"A connected toy is a computer and it must be considered as one," warned Matthew Farcot. "The piracy of a connected toy can have numerous more or less serious consequences. It is quite possible for a cyber criminal to speak directly to the child without the knowledge of the parents".

The rights of European consumers were also discussed, as well as several future EU directives and their impact on citizens.
