At the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council held on Monday 26 June 2017 in Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy called for a more ambitious Europe in terms of energy efficiency.

Ministers discussed proposals for directives on energy efficiency and energy performance of buildings, which will form the future framework for energy saving and reduction of energy consumption in Europe by 2030. This framework constitutes one of the 5 pillars of the Energy Union which is being put in place.

Concerning the energy performance of buildings, the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council accepted the compromise proposed by the Maltese Presidency. As regards energy efficiency, Luxembourg has actively contributed to the compromise proposals submitted, in particular on the initiative of Germany and France, with a view to maximising the level of ambition.

The decision adopted by the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council foresees an energy efficiency target of 30% by 2030, with an energy saving obligation for Member States of 1.5% between 2020 and 2025 and 1.0% between 2026 and 2030.
